Women's vocal consort Polifemy (dir. Robyn Mellor) presents its 2024 Xmas concert.Christmas in Australia is all about waiting.
Waiting for Summer with its dreamy twilight evenings. Waiting for the first trip to the beach, lazy mornings, sleepy afternoons, watermelon , ice-cream. Waiting for celebrations with family and friends, for the exchange of gifts, for good food and bad jokes.
But Christmas has always been about waiting. Christmas music conveys a feeling of breathless expectation and hope. Mary waiting for an unexpected baby. The magi following a star for months on end. The shepherds trembling at the sight of angels in the sky, waiting for the world to change in ways yet to be imagined.
Polifemy's program aims to capture this sense of anticipation with works by Renaissance composers John Sheppard, Tomas Luis de Victoria, Jacobus Handl, Agostino Agazzari and Juan de Castro, complemented by modern carols from Sarah Quartel, Wilfrid Mellors, Oliver Tarney, and James MacMillan.
