About Face: How to Read Portraits, with Alice Foster (UK)
About
Portraits are complex to produce andquite distinct from other categories
in art in the way they are made, the
nature of what they represent and
how they work in terms of display.
Portraits may range from the symbolic
to images where concern with
identity opens the areas of character,
personality, mood, status, costume, occupation, gender and
age. Understanding the relationship between sitter and painter
is also vital when perusing a portrait.
Alice Foster is a lecturer at Oxford University and two Oxford
museums. She organizes art history study days, weekly classes
and regular lectures for ArtsNational.
