Rotary Geelong East is hosting a fundraising night for the Fight Cancer Foundation and we would like to invite you and your members and friends to join us on Tuesday 17th September. The night is fun with two guest speakers - Mark Yeates (VFL Cats player) and the CATS first AFLW first female Life Member of Geelong Cats, Renee Garing. Two great speakers, a night of fun, Quiz, 'Best Dressed' - Wear your footy gear (scarfs, caps, guernsey, sox, badges, Hoodies, T-shirts etc.) Date: Tuesday 17 September 2024 Time: 6.00pm (fellowship) for a 6.30pm start Venue: Naval Association, 90-92 Skene Street, NEWTOWN VIC As all funds will be going to the Fight Cancer Foundation, we can ensure more money is raised by 'Bringing a Plate to Share'. ROTARY - Science and Engineering Challenge Dinner 2024

The Geelong Region Science and Engineering Challenge Dinner Guest speaker Pete Newman from the University of Newcastle on the positive impact this program has had on year 10 students engaging with STEM subjects. Plus a S&EC "Mini Challenge", to show off our skills. Wednesday 19 June 6:00 pm Waurn Ponds Hotel Bistro, side room. Order your meal on arrival, as you will be invited to be involved in a mini challenge event that will start at 6:45 pm. The Science and Engineering Challenge (SEC) is an outreach program founded by the University of Newcastle in the year 2000. Since then, it has grown to involve over 120 Rotary clubs and 30 Universities, reaching over 1,000 schools and 35,000 people nationwide. The Science and Engineering Challenge provides a pathway of memorable and fun experiences for young people during their years at school, through University and into the STEM workforce. “Inspiring tomorrow’s innovators with fun STEM activities today”

Since the launch in 2009, they've become a game changing force in the Young Carer space, developing internationally recognised best practice programs and changing the lives of thousands of young carers. Monika is a Family Support Worker based in our region and an integral part of the Little Dreamers community. She will share insights into the Little Dreamers story, the programs they run, and how through collaboration we can help make a difference in our community. Light supper will follow.

Rotary Geelong East takes much pleasure in inviting you to our next scheduled FACE TO FACE meeting to be held at Leopold Library this Tuesday, 7 May 2024 Story Dogs - Vanessa Roadley Story Dogs is a reading support program where selected children read to an accredited dog and its trained handler. When children read to a dog the outcomes are amazing: they have fun, they are not judged, their focus improves, their reading skills increase and their confidence soars. Vanessa has been involved with Story Dogs since March 2022 and last year took on the role co-ordinator of Geelong - Central & Northern. Having worked as a teacher, becoming a volunteer with Story Dogs gave Vanessa the opportunity to share her love of children and Dogs. Vanessa and 'Poppy' help children in Central and Northern Geelong area. Light supper will follow.

Rotary Geelong East takes much pleasure in inviting you to our next scheduled FACE TO FACE meeting to be held at Leopold Library this Tuesday, 23 April 2024 Anzac Day special event - Robin Mawson Thursday is our national day of remembrance - ANZAC Day. We have arranged a special speaker to talk about the ANZAC legend. Robin Mawson spent eight years in the Army Reserve in the Royal Australian Electrical Mechanical Engineers. He was awarded the National Craftsman of the Year in 1993. He has a strong interest in military history and has been and continues to be active in local and national military organisations for over 35 years. Outside of his military interests Robin and his wife Gail have run a successful local business, Mawson Motors for 42 years. During 15 years of running his own business he also worked with the Gordon running training for them. Robin will be talking about the ANZAC Legend and discussing what is true about it and how much is reality.

Meli (formerly Bethany Community Support) undertakes the ROAR program four times per year. ROAR is an 8 week, 2.5 hours per week, group program for women who have experienced family violence. Each week various themes and education sessions are conducted with and for the women to share stories and recovery journeys in a facilitated, supported environment. Due to funding decreases in 2024, the program was looked under threat, however, because of the wonderful efforts of our Club, we have provided a donation to keep the program operating throughout 2024. Come along to our club meeting and hear from the family violence workers at Meli more about the program, the success stories and the value of such a program to our community.

As we say goodbye to our long summer nights and welcome in beautiful Autumn, our March social night will reflect this. Mozzies, flies, a dropped burnt sausage here and there 😊 Come along and have a leisurely BYO picnic or BBQ with us at Eastern Garden’s Rotunda. With tables and chairs and a BBQ available – it's BYO everything else! Alternatively, we can provide you with a small, light individual picnic hamper and juice drink from Dial A Lunch for $22 and we’ll even set the table for you! Come for a walk with Annette around the Eastern Gardens walking track and build up an appetite (suitable for everyone - 3km or there’s a short cut I can show you for 1.5km 😊). For those that stay at the Rotunda – enjoy the setting sun and a view of the glistening water through the trees.

Back in 1985 our newest Rotarian shifted from the country to Geelong to study at the Gordon and served many meals, cooked many dishes at the Davidson Restaurant. I'm keen to go back and see what its like now, after almost 40 years! Who wants to join me? This is open to family and friends as well. Our Social evening will consist of a beautiful meal, a short presentation from the lecturers regarding the hospitality program and of course, good company! Hear from Annette, our Vice President and "Say No" Club Champion as she provides much needed background and context to this serious issue and outlines some of the programs and initatives underway where we can look to make a difference in our community.

ROTARY - SPECIAL EVENT - Sparrowvale Wetlands Project Tour

Saturday 17 June 2023
Be one of the first to visit this exciting CoGG project.  This natural and constructed wetlands occupy around 200 hectares with all areas subject to flooding at times from the Barwon River. Sparrowvale is a part of the Barwon River floodplain and supports a diverse range of salt marsh, sub-saline marsh and freshwater wetland vegetation.  Complementary morning tea, please BYO own coffee cup. Please note: moderate fitness required as this will be a walking tour. Self-drive or complimentary bus from Geelong CBD Cost is $5.00 per person. Limited places – only 15 people can be catered for. With food waste making up a third of the average household landfill bin, CoGG  plans to be processing all organic household waste from 2025-26.  The Anakie site uses in-vessel HotRot machines.  This is a great opportunity to see how this site operates and maybe take home a few tips as well. A wonderful example of Community and Service, truly inspiring and not to be missed.

Hear from Secretary and PE Sam Hayward as he outlines a ground breaking mental health initiative set to open later this year to serve the needs of our community, one that was co-designed and built alongside the very people who need it.

ROTARY - **SPECIAL EVENT** - Build Your Own Bee Hotel!

Saturday 18 March 2023
Bee Hotels have become an important part of providing garden bees with security from predators. Given the importance of bees to our fruit, vegetables and flowers, it is important that we provide them with as much support as possible. Bees have many human induced problems to contend with, so this is an opportunity for us to support them. A ‘Build & Take’ workshop, is to be conducted on Saturday 18th March at Barwon Timber. Materials supplied and you get to take home your Bee Hotel. Cost is $5.00 per person. Children under 15 will not be allowed to make the hotel without parental guidance. Limited places – only 15 people can be catered for. This activity is open to Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike.
