The Pathway to Parenthood is a full day course and open to women and their partners to attend at any time throughout pregnancy. During the initial phase of the course there is an emphasis on self-reflection, as well as couple reflection, in relation to their journey into becoming parents. Discussion will centre around building a village, self-care, antenatal and postnatal feelings, emotions as well as anxiety and depression. Expectant parents will also be encouraged to reflect on thier beliefs, values and philosophies that they desire to become the foundation blocks of their own unique family.
The course focus then shifts to baby, whereby parents-to-be learn about the factors that determine secure infant attachment and emotional intelligence, and how through self-reflection and awareness they can become attunded and responsive to their baby's needs. In addition, emerging parents will gain an understanding of their newborn's capacity in relation to how they adapt to the world. Topics covered include:
- The need for a fourth trimester
- Unsettledness of baby
- Tired signs
- Gentle sleep and settling techniques
- Safe sleep requirements
- Breastfeeding as well as infant feeding
- Play in relation to brain development.
