Two Pianos: Luke Howard/Nat Bartsch & Pat Jaffe/Matt Steele
In a rare treat, Tempo Rubato's two beautiful pianos will be brought together to give two pairs of pianists the opportunity to perform as duos.
Nat and Luke have been collaborators for many years, drawn to each other’s similar aesthetic and musical values. Both began writing and composing in the jazz scene in Melbourne, but have since evolved their creative practice to work predominantly in the neoclassical music scene: blending classical composition, improvisation and ambient electronics at the piano. Luke releases music on UK label Mercury KX while Nat's music has been released on ABC Classic and ABC Jazz, as well as her own label Amica Records.
The opening set will feature the duo piano project of Pat Jaffe and Wellington-born Matt Steele. Their free improvisations explore sound worlds ranging from chamber-music inspired minimalism to joyous, spiritual jazz-infused grooves.
