Interested in singing but lacking confidence in music reading? Or perhaps you have some experience with music reading and would like to take your sight singing to the next level. These courses are for you. Run by our experienced parish musicians, you’ll have the opportunity to start from nothing, with the beginner course, or build on your existing skills in our intermediate course.
Each course is in two parts offering the opportunity to attend any combination of sessions.
Beginner Level
Part 1 assumes no knowledge of music notation and/or no experience with sight singing. The focus is on understanding the basic principles behind music notation for pitch and rhythm. This section of the course focuses on tempo, rhythm, basic pitch patterns and their notation. Part 2 assumes this foundational knowledge and applies the concepts more directly to sight singing.
The course suits those with little or no knowledge of music reading. Part 2 might suit those who have some experience in music reading, those brushing up on previous learning, or those interested in sight singing solfa approaches. All ages are welcome.
Intermediate Level
Part 1 assumes some experience in music reading and a foundational understanding of pitch and rhythm notation. The course briefly revises basic key concepts before focussing on more advanced applications of pitch, time rhythm, phrasing, dynamics, terminology and genre. The focus of Part 2 will be determined by the skills of the group selecting a specific focus such as complex intervals or sight-singing in parts.
The course suits those with prior music reading experience, and/or Grade 3 and above.
