Gippsland Red Meat Conference
About
The Gippsland Red Meat Conference will be held at the Sale Baptist Church on Tuesday 29th August 2023.
We have a fantastic line up of presenters from the red meat industry that will cover topics such as genetics, carbon, markets, sheep, cattle and dairy.
Two very different pathways to property ownership will be discussed at the 2023 Gippsland Red Meat Conference.
Have you ever heard a successful businessman present his story and thought “that’s fine and very interesting, but how is it relevant to my operation?”.
This concept will be explored in a session called Big Farm/Little Farm at the Gippsland Red Meat Conference.
On one side of the ledger, a renowned commercial operation is passed on to the next generation, which takes it to a new level.
On the other side, a new entrant to the industry tries to find a pathway to farm ownership, and it’s not easy. He can borrow money to buy land, but not to stock it with animals, and a farm without animals doesn’t pay the bills.
Big Farm/Little Farm explores the two different pathways, and the surprise is that there are commonalities in both approaches, and despite their differences, each farmer can learn from the other’s approach to business.
It’s not that long ago that Simon Quilty, market analyst from MLX, gave MLA’s analysts a very large metaphorical whack at a public forum.
At a previous presentation in early February in Sale, Simon contended MLA’s assessment of the size of Australia’s cattle herd was grossly overstated, and likely to result in a severely depressed cattle market.
Well, he got that right! The current store cattle market is certainly depressed, but the good news is that that presents opportunities for those prepared to take a risk. To buy now, or to buy later?
And will Simon’s view be echoed by his biggest competitor in the market analyst field, Robert Herrmann from Mecardo? Despite their different perspectives, their combined history of predicting the market timing and direction is commendable.
Listen to what Simon says, and make up your own mind.
Rozzie O’Reilly Operations Manager at LAMBPRO, leads a team of presenters who will run a specific programme for young farmers at the Gippsland Red Meat Conference.
She invites agricultural employers to send their trainees or young family members to the conference to be empowered and motivated by speakers who have forged their own pathway to a successful agricultural career.
She will share with other young farmers the role that mentors have played in her career, and how she now finds herself fulfilling the role of mentor to newcomers to the industry at the tender age of 30.
The special Young Farmers’ programme is featured for the first time at this year’s conference, with special prices and activities designed exclusively for those under 35 year-olds who attend.

Mark Ferguson from neXtgen Agri, whose regular podcast “The Head Shepherd” features the latest in livestock, genetics, innovation and technology, will spend some time discussing joining ewe lambs, and interpreting Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs), and making them work for you.
“From Little things, Big Things grow.
We sent a camera crew out to a property west of Sale to hear and see how Scott Langley has weathered the tough times and built up a sizable operation from very small beginnings.
Join us for our first virtual farm tour, a video diary of a day on Scott’s patch, and how he got to call it his own.
How do you build a winning team in agriculture?
Do you need a highly credentialled big name coach (a la AFL’s Damian Hardwick or Alastair Clarkson) or can you find the next Craig Macrae hiding under a rock somewhere?
And who do you need in your team?
- A lawyer?
- An accountant?
- A banker?
- A consultant?
Hang the expense, we’ll get the lot of them, and they can convince us (or otherwise), of the value they bring to your farm business team.
A lawyer, and accountant and a banker walk into a bar. What follows may surprise you……..
