Picnic at Hanging Rock - St Michael's Grammar 10-12 Play
Tom Wright’s haunting, gothic and stylised adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s classic novel uses five school students to conjure the mystery that takes place on a fateful St Valentine’s Day in 1900 when students and teachers at prestigious Appleyard College venture to Hanging Rock for a picnic. This is a production that resists a concrete narrative structure and presents the story in a dreamlike, symbolic landscape that, at times, becomes nightmarish. In doing so it places emphasis on the arrogance and ignorance of colonialism in an ancient land, the fluidity of time, the façade of ‘’civility’’, and gender oppression. Originally staged at the Malthouse with a cast of five women, the St Michael’s Grammar School production has an expanded and diverse cast.
This production is not recommended for younger audiences and is intended for secondary school students and adults.
Discretion is advised. Triggering content: psychological abuse, self-harm and depictions of violence.
