Daniel Herscovitch - Studies in Black and White
Piano works by three generations of Australian composers: Don Banks, Roger Smalley and Kate Moore. Melbourne-born Don Banks, (b.1923) was one of our leading modernists, and interestingly first made his name in Britain as a composer of film music for the Hammer horror franchise (Rasputin, the Mad Monk, The Mummy's Shroud, The Frozen Dead etc). Roger Smalley, born 1943, was from the next generation. Like Banks, he enjoyed worldwide renown. He was also a virtuoso pianist and this concert presents a diverse selection from his oeuvre. Kate Moore, now resident in Holland, is performed throughout Europe, North America and Australia. She is a cellist, but has composed extensively for the piano.
This evening's concert also functions as the Melbourne triple launch of Daniel's three recent CDs devoted to these composers.
