Esmond Choi - Desireless, with infinite calm
Esmond Choi is an Australian pianist/composer, currently a post-graduate at the Elder Conservatorium. He is researching how one can employ, experience and enrich the understanding of oneself as musician through American Transcendentalism.
“As long as there’s a world around, there’s a chance for any music to make its way. But sometimes, the world looks gloomy. I guess that happens all the time. Time can be erosive; we all know that…So, is fun while it lasted…” (Crumb on the future of music From Vox Hominis)
The program is based on the performer’s response to the passing of George Crumb. We begin the journey from Sorrow (Liszt's Nuages Gris) to Desireless (Crumb's Starry Night).
PROGRAM
Franz LISZT Nuages Gris
Toru TAKEMITSU Litany
Olivier MESSIAEN Je dors mais mon coeur veille (I sleep, but my heart keeps watch)
J.S. BACH Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland (Now comes the gentle Saviour)
George CRUMB Metamorphoses Book II: Ten Fantasy-Pieces (after celebrated paintings)
