Brieley Cutting and Christopher Pidcock - Grand Duet
'Windows into Contrasting Worlds'
Brieley Cutting, piano
Christopher Pidcock, cello
The significance of this program lies in the three selected works being composed by innovative, brilliant female composers, being of utmost quality and having been largely ignored, especially in Australia.
We are given contrasting windows into the worlds and creative spaces of two commanding female composers, Rita Strohl from France and living 1865-1941, and Galina Ustvolskaya having her life in Soviet Russia from 1919 to 2006.
Strohl’s Great Dramatic Sonata is based on a story of love, power and glory during the Roman empire, her music reflecting this as lush, Romantic, and passionate. Equally expressive, Ustvolskaya gives us her Grand Duet, brutally uncompromising, innovative and thrilling. Between them is a palate cleanser from another French composer, the famous and influential Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979). Her Three Pieces are miniatures of intense character and precision.
