Prokofiev – Symphony no. 5
The Mendelssohn Violin Concerto is one of the best loved violin concertos of all time. Emerging violin soloists see playing it as an essential part of their coming of age. Thirteen-year-old Nicholas Feng, the latest Australian aspiring violinist to follow this path, will return to Melbourne from his studies at the Yehudi Menuhin School in London just for this concert! Nicholas has won many significant awards for both his piano and violin playing including recently becoming the youngest winner of the Audience Award at the Preston Symphony Concerto Competition.
We will be delighted to introduce a new work for orchestra commissioned by Zelman Symphony from foremost Australian composer Linda Kouvaras.
Prokofiev wrote his Symphony no. 5 at the end of WWII. He is quoted as saying that it is “a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit.” This magnificent symphony offers a wonderfully dramatic conclusion to Zelman Symphony’s 2024 season.
