Acacia Quartet - Tchaikovsky, Chan, Borodin
Lisa Stewart, violin
Doreen Cumming, violin
Stefan Duwe, viola
Anna Martin-Scrase, cello
PROGRAM
Peter TCHAIKOVSKY String Quartet No 1 Op 11
Lyle CHAN Entering The Palaces
Alexander BORODIN String Quartet No. 2 in D major
Formed in 2010, Acacia is one of Australia's most respected ensembles. They've recorded 12 albums and twice been nominated for Aria Music Awards' Best Classical Album. They present a program of landmark Russian quartets.
The success of Tchaikovsky’s 1st string quartet, written in 1871, helped raise his stature in Moscow, where he was teaching at the Conservatory. Its Andante movement, inspired by a Ukrainian folk song, is now one of the most beloved romantic works. Borodin's lyrical 2nd string quartet is equally beloved, entering the 'super popular' realm after two of its melodies were used in the 1953 musical Kismet. Between them sits an excerpt from an upcoming play for actors and orchestra, arranged by Chan especially for the quartet.
