Author talk - Beverley Pinder, 'Pride without Prejudice'
About
Growing up in poverty in 1950s Ceylon (as Sri Lanka was then) Beverley Pinder found solace in a recurring dream - becoming a princess.Migrating to Australia with the family as a thirteen-year-old, her fanciful aspirations came true when entry in contests such as Junior Miss Victoria led all the way to her becoming Miss Universe Australia!
Wearing a sparkling tiara, she represented her new homeland in the world final in Mexico.
Having fulfilled the dream, she changed tack entirely, going on to build a flourishing public relations company, working with clients in business, the arts, entertainment, sport and the community, before becoming a Melbourne City Councillor, working side by side with Father Bob Maguire, and being awarded an OAM for her selfless work for migrants, the disadvantaged, disabled, homeless and vulnerable.
Along the way, her heritage drew racist taunts and threats, but as her memoir title ‘Pride without Prejudice’ indicates, she rose above it all.
