Transvaal Avenue consists of 60 existing trees to which were added a further 107 when the ‘Avenue’ was opened on 31st August 1900 and follows a curved path from the entrance gates at Elgin and Walker streets, through to Devonshire Street. The ‘added’ trees were named for generals of the Boer War.The Memorial Walk in Maitland Park is full of surprises. In all there are 14 principal memorials and a further eight supplementary ones. All have a story to tell ….
