On-Road Bicycle Skills for Delivery Riders - Port Phillip
With an emphasis on on-road practical experience, the aim of this course is to empower delivery riders with improved traffic skills and awareness, and to teach road rules specific to bike riders, so that they can keep themselves and others safe when riding on the roads.
This course is commissioned by the City of Port Phillip and facilitated by Bike it Better, for people who live or conduct their work in City of Port Phillip.
Following a quick recap on bike handling skills, the focus of this session is on road and traffic skills and safety, route planning, and with maximum practical experience out on the road. At the end of the course, we intend that participants leave feeling they have the knowledge and confidence to ride on roads confidently and independantly.
The session will be facilitated by 2 instructors – with one at the front and one at the rear of the group
when riding on road.

Cost: Free.
This training usually costs $180. However, delivery riders who live or work in City of Port Phillip are eligible to participate in this training program at no cost, due to generous subsidies offered by City of Port Phillip Council.
Who is this session suitable for?
- Delivery riders who already have competent bike riding skills, seeking to improve traffic skills and awareness, and learn road rules specific to bike riders, so they can keep themselves and others safe when riding on roads.
- Participants must live or conduct their work in the City of Port Phillip.
Session inclusions:
- How to do a safety check on your bike and equipment
- Check that your bike is correctly fitted and adjusted for you
- Basic bike control skills such as braking, cornering, straight line riding, using gears, and stopping in an emergency
- Essential on-road techniques such as signalling, scanning, and using eye contact
- Traffic skills such as positioning on the road, merging into traffic lanes
- Discussion about riding around town confidently such as using shared paths and bike lanes, how to avoid dooring, negotiating tram tracks and other obstacles, road rules for bicycles, and how to plan your route to avoid dangers
- A 2 hour on-road ride in traffic, including stops to discuss scenarios such as roundabouts, stop signs, other intersections, hook turns, bike lanes, and tram/train lines (where available)
- Lots of time for questions and answers
How many participants will be in the group?
- The group size is limited to 7 participants.
What should I bring?
- A road-legal* bicycle of suitable size and type, in good condition with working brakes, a bell and pumped up tyres. If you are unsure, please email bikeitbettercyclecoaching@gmail.com prior to booking.
- Australian Standards Approved helmet in good condition
- Runners or similar closed-toe footwear
- Sun/weather protection
- Snacks and water as needed
- Any medication
- Suitable clothing for the conditions
* road-legal bicycles in Victoria, when powered with e-assist, must be pedal-assist only and may not be controlled by a throttle, and the e-assist must cut out at 25km/hr. E-bikes with conditions outside of these are not considered bicycles under Victorian road law. Due to insurance requirements, any participants who attend the session on bicycles that are not considered road-legal under Victorian road law with not be able to participate in the practical components of the session.
What is the start/finish time?
The session will take place from 1pm - 4pm. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to sign in and prepare your bike.
Do I need to attend both sessions?
No, each session is separate, so you can choose which date you wish to attend and book for that session only.
Where should I come for the training?
The session will take place at Peanut Farm Reserve, 21 Spenser St, St Kilda VIC 3182. You will be sent a reminder email with these details and where to meet a few days before the session.
What facilities are there at the location?
Toilets, water and undercover areas will be available.
What if the weather isn’t great?
The training will only be cancelled if the weather forecast predicts very wet, very windy or very hot weather. In this event, we will contact you 2 hours’ prior to the start time. If weather conditions deteriorate after training has begun, training activities may be modified or omitted or the session terminated to minimise health and safety risks.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket?
You don't need to bring your ticket on the day. We will have a list of registered participants.
What if I can't attend the session?
If you have booked a ticket and can no longer attend, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open up your spot for somebody else to attend.

Stay at home if unwell or if you are a contact of someone who has been unwell and who is being tested for coronavirus (COVID-19) infection.
All attendees must comply with the current Victorian Government COVID restrictions.
