Family Values by David Williamson
Directed by Louise Haggerty
Family Values has all the set pieces of family Xmas lunch conflict, stirred, shaken, and then “Succession” like with every pretentious and public value set alight.
The scene is that Roger is turning 70. A man of success he doesn’t want any fuss just a special time with Sue, his wife, and their three children. Maybe some balloons. It is a party after all.
But Emily, Lisa and Michael have other ideas. Ideas they need to share even persuade their family to share given that all 3 of them have made significant changes to their own lives - from activism for the protection of refugees, through the place of religion in family life, the sanctity of border control, the whole LBQTI world. A simple family birthday get together, right?
It’s like your worst family Christmas lunch where deeply held beliefs are pulled apart and long held resentments resurface. Crackling dialogue, perceptive insight and fierce humour that skewers hypocrisy. Classic David Williamson.
