Celebrating the creation of beautiful and witty songs from the masterful pen of Cole Porter
His consummate musical gifts were recognised as unique throughout the world. Who can forget his glamorous, elegant, enchanting compositions in smash hits such as; 'Kiss me Kate', 'Les Girls' and 'High Society' where Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly and Louis Armstrong made the world sing and dance. These brilliant contributions in the field of musical theatre and film made him an international legend during his lifetime.
From 1927 he wrote light, continental-style music in a jazz idiom encouraged by Irving Berlin and today the brilliant voice of June Garber is supported by the outstanding lineup of:
John Reeves (Piano), Paul Williams (Saxophone & Clarinet), Paul Hendon (Saxophone & Clarinet), John Conley (String Bass) and Rod Andrew (Drums), performing many of the Jazz compositions written by this extraordinary musician.
It’s one of those special events you’re sure to get a kick out of!
About Cole Porter:
Cole Porter made a remarkable and highly acclaimed impact on the American Stage and Film industry. His first attempt at writing a score was at 9 years of age when he produced ‘Song Of The Birds’.
As a well-bred rich young man, Cole’s musical interests in his early days attracted the reputation of the ‘Playboy of popular music’ but in private musical circles he was known for his creativity, distinct wit, sophistication and extraordinary skills in composing complex popular songs.
By 1927 he mainly composed for fun. Broadway shows, Annual Reviews and Film scores. His lighthearted, continental style scores in the Jazz idiom included, ‘Now You Has Jazz’, ‘High Society’ as a calypso and ‘Miss Otis Regrets’. Irving Berlin was his main employer and with his backing, Cole’s songs included ‘Let’s Do It’, ‘Anything Goes’ and ‘I Get A Kick Out Of You’. The 1948 show Kiss Me Kate was regarded as one of Cole’s masterpieces.
Following 55 years composing some 203 songs, from a partially complete list, his scores for the film ‘Can Can’ and the hit film that opened with the memorable scene of Louis Armstrong and his band on the bus playing the calypso composition ‘High Society’ were recognized as Cole Porter’s most attractive film scores.
Cole Porter’s songs reflected the man: witty, urbane and although he strenuously rejected the designation, sophisticated.
