Switch on to Science 2024
Explore the Museum to discover the science that makes things work.
Again this year, Redland Museum will hold its very popular Switch on to Science day in conjunction with National Science Week.
It will be held from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm on Monday 12th August, which is the Ekka holiday for the Redland community.
Switch on to Science is an annual event where museum volunteers operate and demonstrate a wide variety of working vintage equipment and talk about the science and technology principles that make them work. Everyone will be encouraged to try operating the old equipment and to explore how technology has evolved over the years. The aim is simply to learn while having fun.
The museum’s science coordinator, Ross Bower, says “working vintage machines are perfect for demonstrating the basic principle of science because they are much simpler than modern machines, and it is easier to understand how they work. Also, they are lots of fun to watch and to play with”.
Switch on to Science aims to challenge the curious of all ages and get people to think about the science in our everyday surroundings. Although intended mainly for young people, there will be plenty to interest and entertain parents and grandparent too. For some of us it will be a happy walk down memory lane.
Ruben Meerman, the Surfing Scientist, returns this year with two spectacular shows that are both exciting and educational. His demonstrations bring science to life, captivating audiences of all ages with awe-inspiring displays.
Liquid Nitrogen Show 11am - Experience the amazing scientific properties of liquid nitrogen in this explosive lecture. See how solids, liquids and gases behave when they're extremely cold.
