The School of Education is delighted to invite you to a Twilight Seminar: Linguistic Landscapes, Creativity, and Language Learning. This seminar will be presented by Dr Jessica Bradley, from the University of Sheffield.

Language learning has received significant attention in education and public discussions, and the landscape of language learning is evolving rapidly. This issue is often presented as a challenge, as fewer children and young people choose to study languages at school and university language departments are closing. However, more recent theories of multilingualism highlight the flexibility and dynamism of linguistic repertoires. This means we creatively utilise the different languages in our “communicative toolkit” in our daily lives.

Dr Bradley will offer a unique perspective on linguistic landscapes in the context of language learning. This seminar will use a visual representation of languages in public spaces, drawing on examples from participatory research with young people, art education, and socially engaged art. This innovative approach promises to shed new light on how language learning can be informed by our experiences in public spaces.Registrations and light refreshments will be served in the Building 17 foyer from 3:30pm.Certificate of participation available on request.Please contact us for a discount code if you are an ECU staff member or student.
