Walter Reeks, Naval architect, yachtsman and entrepreneur
David Payne, Honorary Research Associate, Australian National Maritime Museum discusses his latest publication on the life of Walter Reeks, The story of Reeks, Australia’s first full-time naval architect, has been unknown for decades. Now, with the publication of this wonderful book his fascinating, and at times tragic, story has been rediscovered.
He was highly respected by his peers, noted for his designs of recreational yachts and his innovative design work on Sydney Harbour ferries. A resident of Mosman, in 1895 his wife passed away leaving him to care for their son, Kent, and daughter, Thelma. Tragically in 1914, Kent was murdered in the United Kingdom where he was to sit his marine engineering exams, following in his father’s footsteps. A story not to be missed.
