The end of the matter: sanitation in Ancient Greece and Rome (SOLD OUT)
About
What goes in must come out, one way or another. How did the ancient Greeks and Romans deal with the inevitable and unsavoury outputs of their wining and dining – especially in large, crowded urban centres like Athens and Rome? Were their arrangements purely a matter of practicality? Or was waste disposal something to be celebrated in the ancient city?
Is this where we see some of the greatest ancient engineering feats, such as Rome’s Cloaca Maxima, the colossal sewer which even had its own goddess? And was a trip to the loo simply a private necessity – or could it be a social event?
