Rothschild's Violin
About
The Australian premiere of Venjamin Fleischmann's one-act opera Rothschild's Violin (1941) in its original orchestration by Dmitri Shostakovich. after the short story by Anton Chekhov.Christopher Hillier, principal baritone of Opera Australia, Victorian Opera, and Melbourne Opera, leads an outstanding cast of Australian singers in this beautiful, tragic-comic story of prejudice, miserliness, emotional repression, and ultimate redemption. The work also has an extraordinary reception history, mirrored in the personal history of its two composers; one famously suffering under Stalin's rule. and the other killed in the opening days of the Nazi invasion of Russia.
The performance (which lasts about 45 min) will be preceded by a pre-performance talk.
