Ash Wednesday Play Reading (SOLD OUT)
About
By Kate Rice | Directed by Iain Sinclair“The Ash Wednesday play” was commissioned by the festival in 2022 to explore a deeply personal local story that embodies our themes of place, story, and nature. Inspired by the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires in Macedon, the play reimagines the night hundreds sought refuge at the Macedon Railway Hotel, just 200m from our festival hub.
Drawing from survivor interviews and extensive research, the play features fictional characters that honour the shared experiences of this devastating event, allowing us to explore broader themes of community resilience and disaster response.
The production is designed to be intimate and immersive, blending professional and community performances in an elevated reading format. Beloved actors Shane Jacobson and Pia Miranda will join community performers under the direction of Iain Sinclair.
This year, we’re excited to present five performances: 3 with Q&A sessions featuring the cast and special guests.
