The iconic and classic 1960's stage play based on the book by Ken Kesey, set inside a mental institution.
ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST BY DALE WASSERMAN
The play centres on Randall P McMurphy who is transferred to the instititution feigning mental illness to escape the drudgery of the prison farm. McMurphy believes he can complete his short sentence in obsurity and somewhat luxury. However the institution is ruled by the steely Nurse Ratched who has total authority and control of patients and staff. .
McMurphy's big ally is Chief Bromden a native American Indian who has been in the institution for 10 years. Chief Bromden is a catatonic, or lends us to believe he is. In some ways the institution is even harder on him and in McMurphy he finds a kindred spirit. McMurphy is encouraging and supportive of the other patients to stand up and fight against the Big Nurse and the institution. For a moment they gain back their confidence and self esteem. However McMurphy keeps testing the boundaries and a battle ensues between he and the Big Nurse with catostrophic outcomes.
