Phillip Johnston "Page of Madness" (1926)

Page of Madness (1926) by Teinosuke Kinugasa with original music by Phillip Johnston
Phillip Johnston’s original score for Teinosuke Kinugasa’s Japanese silent film masterpiece reflects the film’s experimental techniques which invoke both surrealism and German Expressionism. Using a combination of notated and improvised composition, performed by some of Sydney’s most accomplished and creative musicians, Page of Madness provides an experience which is at once melancholy, unnerving and moving.
The feature film will be preceded by a short: Bhanu Pratap’s graphic short story "Big Head Pointy Nose" (2023).
Phillip Johnston: alto saxophone; Daryl Pratt: vibraphone; Chris Abrahams: piano; Lloyd Swanton: bass.
$30/$15, and BYO food and drink. Doors from 7.30pm, music from 8pm!
