A Dunera conversation with Nick Ross CBE
About the Event
Join us for a compelling conversation with Nick Ross CBE, one of Britain’s most well-known journalists and broadcasters, as he delves into his family's Dunera history. Nick is a prominent figure in British media, known for his pioneering work on television and radio, particularly his long-running role as the host of the BBC’s Crimewatch. With a career spanning decades, Nick has earned numerous accolades for his contribution to journalism, including his Commander of the British Empire (CBE) honor for services to broadcasting.
In this session, he will share the story of his father, Hans Carl Rosenbluth (later John Caryl Ross), who was among the thousands deported to Australia on the Dunera and interned at Hay and later Tatura from 1940 to 1941. After his release, Hans returned to Britain and served in the Pioneer Corps. He was also the son of Pinchas Rosen, Israel’s first justice minister, adding another remarkable chapter to this family’s history.
Nick will reflect on how the Dunera episode shaped his father’s life and the lasting impact it has had on his own journey and career. Leading the discussion is Dr. Seumas Spark, Adjunct Research Fellow in History at Monash University and co-author of Dunera Lives, a definitive two-volume history of the Dunera Boys. With his extensive expertise, Dr. Spark will provide deeper insight into this pivotal moment in history and its ongoing significance.
