Central to this concert is Karlheinz Stockhausen's Tierkreis, a compelling series of 12 short character pieces inspired by the Zodiac, each encapsulating the essence of its celestial counterpart. The program interweaves arrangements of Bach’s intricate Inventions, Chick Corea’s playful Children’s Songs, circular medieval songs, and the musicians’ own improvisations. Each set reflects universal themes of connection and transformation, mirroring the cyclical nature of the zodiac itself. Music by J. Ciconia, J.S. Bach, T. Merula, Ch. Corea, K.H. Laura Vaughan | Baryton, Heidi von Bernewitz | viola, Thomas Marlin | cello The little-known baryton is a Classical instrument similar in size to a cello, with 6 gut bowed strings plus a course of 10 metal strings which resonate sympathetically and are also plucked like a harp. This magnificent instrument reached its zenith at the court of Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy in Vienna during the time of composer Joseph Haydn, and there exists a significant repertoire of chamber music for baryton which is very rarely performed. Laura Vaughan is one of the foremost performers on the viola da Gamba in Australia and her Baryton is the first in Australia, made by Henner Harders, it is a copy of one by Daniel Agnatius Stadlmann, Vienna, 1732.

We take the music of those two protagonists and the court of Louis XIV, one of the richest epochs of French music, with selections from Lully, Couperin, Charpentier and Marais to illuminate readings from the book by Michael. Zenith: Explorations Series 1

Sunday 14 January 2024
Anna Stegmann | recorders Jorge Jiménez | baroque violins with music by Ciconia, Corea, Hatzis, Satie and more. If you look directly up towards the sky you can visualise the highest point of the celestial sphere, the zenith. This imaginary point describes anything exactly above a particular location. In exploring and extending this idea, our programme boldly inhabits the electric fields of original and arranged repertoire for recorders and different types of violins. Zenith blends medieval melodies with electronic sounds and haunting traditional tunes with innocent song. Just a few original compositions were available to our duo, yet the programme offers arrangements spanning 800 years of repertoire, including original electronic compositions by Jorge. Fluent connections of musical styles present a wealth of sound colours that let the light in as often as they invite darkness. Adelaide Baroque are thrilled to be able to present this duo from Germany on their Australian tour
