Australian Naval Institute

The ANI is a non-profit organisation which aims to provide a forum for people interested in maritime affairs.
The main objectives of the Institute are:
– to encourage and promote the advancement of knowledge related to the Navy and the maritime profession; and
– to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas concerning subjects related to the Navy and the maritime profession.

ANI Goldrick Seminar 2024 : The importance of the maritime domain to Australia’s economic wellbeing and national security As a trading nation, the Australian economy is highly dependent on the security of it’s sea lanes for exports and the import of the goods and information which supply our industries, provide consumer goods and secure our communications with the world. ANI Vernon Parker Oration and Annual Dinner 2024

The ANI will hold the Vernon Parker Oration & Annual Dinner at Hotel Realm in Canberra. The centrepiece of the evening will be the delivery of the 2024 Vernon Parker Oration by Professor Rory Medcalf AM, Head of the National Security College at the Australian National University The evening will also include the awarding of the 2024 McNeil Prize to an individual or team from industry who has made an outstanding contribution to the operational capabilities of the RAN.

ANI Goldrick Seminar 2023 : The Influence of Seapower on Australia's Future As an island nation Australia will always be dependent upon the security of trade routes across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The security of our region may also be dependent upon Australia's naval capability. The creation and maintenance of the capability to project this seapower to secure our trade routes and our region will require significant budgetary input, the development and adoption of new technologies and will require the provision of people and industrial capability. ANI Goldrick Conference 2022

Theme: Indo-Pacific Maritime Strategy in the 21st Century A ‘Corbett 100’ Centenary Event & the 2022 Goldrick Conference 21 September 2022, Adams Auditorium, Australian Defence Force Academy 2022 is the centenary of the death of the British maritime strategist Sir Julian Corbett. He was a major influence on global naval thinking. The King’s College London, the US Naval War College and the Australian Naval Institute (ANI) will hold collaborative conferences and events in the UK, Australia and the US to mark the centenary and explore the ongoing relevance of Corbett’s strategic thinking in the 21st century. The ANI’s contribution to the ‘Corbett 100’ activities will be the 2022 Goldrick Conference. With a program featuring Australian and international speakers this two-day conference will focus on Indo-Pacific Maritime Strategy.

2021 Commodore Sam Bateman Book Prize Awards

The winner will be announced by Captain Simon Bateman, son of the late Commodore Sam Bateman. The Australian Naval Institute’s Commodore Sam Bateman Book Prize is proudly sponsored by the Naval Shipbuilding College.
