St Stephen's Recital Series, no 4: VIVA VIOLA!

Saturday 13 September 2025
Wilma & Friends present a sensational program of string quintet works by Bruckner, Mozart and Nielson. The ravishing timbre of two violas brings a richness and complexity to the sound scape showcased beautifully in this program. Viola was Mozart's favourite instrument to play so it's no wonder he wrote his brilliant string quintets featuring two violas. The D major one is full of the brightness and brilliance of that key and keeps everybody busy. It's flanked by two unfamiliar beauties for the same instrumentation, the short intermezzo by Bruckner, like Mahler, more known for his monumental symphonies, and the only string quintet by Denmark's most celebrated composer, Carl Nielson, only 23 when he wrote it. This fine work was never published in his lifetime, which may explain its relative neglect. Peter Gjelsten, violin Wilma Smith, violin Yuri Zhislin, viola Fiona Sargeant, viola Matthias Balzat, cello

St Stephen's Recital Series, no 5: PASSION & POWER

Saturday 15 November 2025
Wilma & Friends return to present three discoveries - unsung masterpieces! This absolutely ravishing program is for the musical adventurers because at first glance it might look a little outside the comfort zone. But fear not, Viennese Anton Webern, American Amy Beach and Russian Nikolai Meitner have produced stunningly beautiful Romantic works. If you thought you knew Webern by his modernist 2nd Viennese School output this little gem will surprise and delight. Beach and Medtner's piano quintets are absolute winners, almost too much luxuriousness for one program but let's go for it! Anton Webern - Langsamer Satz for String Quartet Amy Beach - Piano Quintet in F# minor, Op. 67 Nikolai Medtner - Piano Quintet in C major, Op. posth. Stefan Cassomenos, piano Monica Curro, violin Wilma Smith, violin Angelina Kim, viola Noah Lawrence, cello
