The Stirling Women’s Shed is an exciting partnership between The City of Stirling and The Joy of Wood. The City of Stirling and The Joy of Wood are committed to working together to continue the growth and development of the Stirling Women’s Shed. Both organisations recognise the value of a space for women to learn, connect and thrive.
Membership of the Stirling Women's Shed has benefits and responsibilities. By becoming a member, you are supporting the establishment and running of this exciting facility. Members are entitled to discounted fees for Workshops, for Scheduled Open Sessions, and free entry to Member-only Special Events and Gatherings.
Membership is open to all Women aged 16 upwards, including people who identify as female.

Come and try a wonderfully creative and different artform - making wire sculptures!
Sally Stoneman is currently an Artist in Residence with the City of Stirling Artist in Residence Program, based at the Scarborough Community Hub in Gildercliffe Street. She is joining in with the Stirling Women's Shed to offer this special event.
Sally will teach and inspire us in the use of soft aluminium wire to create forms.
This two hour workshop is for women of all ages, including girls from a minimum age of 12 years.

Getting Started in Carving a Small Kuksa!

The Kuksa is a traditional drinking vessel originating in far northern Scandinavia, carved from wood. They are an adventure to make, a delight to use, and a feast for the eyes.
No prior woodworking experience necessary. This workshop provides a great opportunity to begin a woodworking journey of discovery. This is the next step for spoon carvers and bowl carvers. We will use a variety of traditional tools and techniques to begin our Kuksa Carving journey! You can use any Open Sesssion to complete your small Kuksa.

Here is a nice twist on Spoon Carving...Create an artistic spoon! Come experience the delights of this artsy end of the wonderful spoon carving craft.
You will start with a nice spoon blank of your choice (not a big chunk of timber like we normally do in our seasoned wood spoon carving workshops) and create a beautiful creative spoon using a range of traditional hand tools.

A fantastic machine in the Stirling Women's Shed is the Compound Sliding Mitre Saw. These are in common use amongst tradespeople like carpenters, joiners and furniture makers.
This large power tool offers the ability to do easy, fast and accurate square cuts to timber up to 300mm wide, but you can also easily "dial up" an angle to cut your timber ends to a required angle.
A training workshop for Stirling Women's shed Members with a min. age of 16 years.
Come and learn to safely and effectively use this versatile machine.

The Marking Gauge is an essential woodworking tool, used for marking out joints especially. A scribe line is more accurate that a pencil for chisel work. This tool makes scribe lines parallel to an edge. They have been used for centuries. This model we will be making is based on a French version from the 17th Century - and is pure genius. The Carpenter's Mallet is used for striking chisels and gouges, for driving in wedges and many other uses around the workshop. They have been used for centuries. The Carver's Mallet tends to be round, the Carpenter's Mallet traditionaly has a rectangular fitted to a handle. Ever wonder how a straight piece of wood gets bent into a cool shape? This workshop will introduces the process of steam bending wood. Learn how to prepare the wood, make a former and use a steam box to bend a simple curve into a kitchen spatula.

Unlock the mystery of picture framing!
In this workshop we will learn to make our own frame profiles using wooden moulding planes, making provision for the glass and the ply back. We will cut the mitres and glue up the frames, and fit the backs and the glass. You can add your own finish later to your completed frame. The glass (150mm x 250mm) and all materials are included in the fee.
NOTE: this is a 4 hour workshop.

The Marking Gauge is an essential woodworking tool, used for marking out joints especially. A scribe line is more accurate that a pencil for chisel work. This tool makes scribe lines parallel to an edge. They have been used for centuries. This model we will be making is based on a French version from the 17th Century - and is pure genius. A quiet small machine hiding in plain sight in the Stirling Women's Shed is the wonderful Hollow Chisel Morticer. These are in common use amongst tradespeople like joiners and furniture makers.
This wonderful bench mounted machine offers the ability to easily cut accurate square holes and rectangular holes (mortices) in timber and furniture components. It is a drill which makes square holes!

Spoon carving is such fun-but sometimes it can be hard to work out how to hold those small pieces of wood while we carve them into our little scoops and small spoons. In this workshop you will learn how to make and use jigs and devices to hold those tricky little pieces.

Introduction to the Compound Mitre Saw

A recent addition to the small machinery in the Stirling Women's Shed has been a Compound Sliding Mitre Saw. These are in common use amongst tradespeople like carpenters, joiners and furniture makers.
This large power tool offers the ability to do easy, fast and accurate square cuts to timber up to 300mm wide, but you can also easily "dial up" an angle to cut your timber ends to a required angle.
A training workshop for Stirling Women's shed Members with a min. age of 16 years.
Come and learn to safely and effectively use this versatile machine.

Make a Small Picture Frame

Unlock the mystery of picture framing!
In this workshop we will learn to make our own frame profiles using wooden moulding planes, making provision for the glass and the ply back. We will cut the mitres and glue up the frames, and fit the backs and the glass. You can add your own finish later to your completed frame. The glass (150mm x 250mm) and all materials are included in the fee.

Ever wonder how a straight piece of wood gets bent into a cool shape? This workshop will introduces the process of steam bending wood. Learn how to prepare the wood, make a former and use a steam box to bend a simple curve into a kitchen spatula.

Come along to learn the Scandinavian tradition of Kolrosing, a nifty a way of "tattooing" wood. Then, get on the tools to make a flower press and apply your new Kolrosing skills to embellish it!
It's a great introduction to the possibilities Kolrosing offers for creating patterns on various wood craft...Flower Presses, Spoons, Spatulas, Butter Knives-endless possibilities!. It is a very cool technique! Kolrosing is a great traditional skill to have up your sleeve!

Ever wonder how a straight piece of wood gets bent into a cool shape? This workshop will introduces the process of steam bending wood. Learn how to prepare the wood, make a former and use a steam box to bend a simple curve into a kitchen spatula.
*Please note your spatula must remain cramped to former for several days to dry and will need to collected and completed the following week during an Open Session time (M 9-12, Th 4-7 or Sat 1-4).
