BGKYN Network Meeting - November 2024
Thursday 14 November 2024
The upcoming November network meeting will provide members an opportunity to understand how they can further support young people in their health and wellbeing journey.
We will hear from two keynote speakers, Emily Dang, Stakeholder Engagement Coordinator, 1800 My Options and Sam Read, Head of Education Services, Sexual Health Victoria who will present:
- an overview of each respective service,
- recent data around the health of young people,
- commonly asked questions about sexual and reproductive health,
- common concerns from young people and how to address them,
- contemporary reproductive and sexual health issues for young people; and
- further information on training courses to upskill individuals or organisations on Consent Matters and Affirmative Consent Laws.

Family, Youth and Children’s Services is committed to educating and empowering parents and carers on ways to keep their children and young people safe online.
This is an engaging 90-min session delivered by Susan McLean from CyberSafety Solutions. Susan McLean was the first Victorian Police Officer appointed to a position involving CyberSafety and young people.
A published author, internationally renowned speaker, and Australia’s foremost expert in cybersafety and young people. Susan’s presentation will cover the benefits of technology as well as what parents and carers need to be aware of, including:
- reality and risk;
- what children and young people are doing online;
- online grooming;
- cyberbullying;
- sharing nude pictures;
- problematic gaming;
- exposure to damaging content; and
- top tips on how to ensure children and young people stay safe online.

Bayside Glen Eira Kingston Youth Network - June Meeting 2024

The upcoming June network meeting will put the spotlight on vaping and what service providers can do to better support young people. We will be joined by guest speaker, Alyce Jenkins from Monash Health’s South East Public Health Unit who will unpack the complexities of young people's vaping behaviours. Alyce is the Vaping Prevention Partnerships Lead with a background in speech pathology and health promotion.
Alyce’s presentation will cover:
- Vaping trends;
- Vaping regulatory changes;
- The importance of correct messaging and other useful techniques that can be implemented when working with young people; and
- Provide an opportunity for group discussions around what tools can be used to mitigate vaping risks within different settings.

The Youth Climate and Sustainability Action Group (YCSAG) have teamed up with Glen Eira's Climate and Sustainability Team to host a Climate Conversation.

GEMYN is providing a new opportunity for participants to upskill and socialise by partaking in accredited Barista training through 'Barista Course Melbourne'. This training is for Young people 16-25 with diverse backgrounds and a link to Glen Eira.
Participants will meet at the new McKinnon Library and Youth Services, and travel together to Melbourne CBD to participate in a 4-hour workshop where they will learn the skills and knowledge required to extract and serve espresso coffee beverages.
