Autism Pathways is pleased to host a two-day workshop with Dr Greg Hanley for Australian professionals. The two-day workshop will focus on
supporting improved behaviour and relationships for individuals with disabilities who display behaviours of concern. Dr Hanley will describe his practical functional assessment and skill-based treatment model, with an emphasis on safe, person-centred, and trauma-informed approaches for addressing behaviours of concern.
Day 1 Part 1: Today’s ABA: A Compassionate and Collaborative Approach for Improving Relationships and Behaviour
Dr Hanley will begin by discussing the components of a contemporary and trauma-assumed version of applied behaviour analysis. Dr Hanley will describe the values at the forefront of this compassionate and collaborative ABA approach and will discuss the sequence of steps in therapeutic processes aimed at improving relationships as part of a holistic approach to providing behaviour support.
Day 1 Part 2: On the Latest Iteration of the Practical Functional Assessment: Knowledge and Application
Through lecture, interactive discussion, and application exercises, Dr Hanley will introduce attendees to the latest iteration of the practical functional assessment. The procedures for maximising the safety, televisibility, and shared rapport of the assessment process will be described and emphasised. Dr Hanley will guide attendees to apply their knowledge of practical functional assessment to specific learners in this part of the workshop. Attendees will have the opportunity to design an assessment process for specific learners based on the practical functional assessment model.
Day 2 Part 1: On the Latest Iteration of the Skill-Based Treatment Process: Knowledge and Application
Through lecture, interactive discussion, and application exercises, Dr Hanley will introduce attendees to the latest iteration of the skill-based treatment process. The effective and parent-validated treatment process will then be described, including strategies for shaping communication and toleration repertoires. The relevance of several choice models for further minimising risks and expanding the practitioner’s scope of practice will also be reviewed. Dr Hanley will guide attendees to apply their knowledge of skill-based treatment to specific learners in this part of the workshop.
Day 2 Part 2: The Universal Protocol: Increasing Safety, Dignity, and Joy Across the Day
The practical functional assessment and skill-based treatment processes have been demonstrated to reduce or eliminate severe problem behaviour and increase important life skills for clients with a variety of strengths and needs. However, building these skills takes time and expertise, and stakeholders often wonder what they should do while a client is awaiting these processes, as well as what to do outside of treatment sessions for clients just beginning the process. In this session, Dr Hanley will describe the Universal Protocol, which offers an across-the-day solution for family members and other key stakeholders. It emphasises safety and dignity for clients and staff, and it is designed to improve client-staff trust and rapport. Dr Hanley will describe the logistics associated with the implementation of the Universal Protocol (i.e., data collection, client specific and organisational outcome measures) and will encourage attendees to apply their knowledge to specific learners.
