This silent horror classic, starring Lon Chaney, is based on Gaston Leroux's novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra (1910). Set inside the Palais Garnier in Paris, it tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius who haunts this Opera House, who falls in love with Christine, a young and talented soprano. The film is presented with improvised piano soundtrack by Robert Sholl.
Sholl has written widely on 20th-century music, and teaches at the Royal Academy of Music (London) and The University of West London. He recently played all the works of Messiaen, the 6 Vierne Symphonies and the complete works of Duruflé at Arundel Cathedral, and has given recitals at St Paul's Cathedral (London), The Madeleine and Notre-Dame de Paris. He has recorded silent film accompaniments (Youtube) and a CD at Coventry Cathedral to be released on Divine Art/Métier in 2023.
