ELEMENTS OF CLASSICAL FIGURE DRAWING
Form and Anatomy - Building a drawing from the torso outwards
Design and Gesture - Organising from long lines inwards to torso
Rendering (shading) to both solidify the figure and emphasising gesture and design
The workshop will begin with building the figure from the torso. This allows a focus on techniques of seeing more accurately, generating more three-dimensionality, working with critical anatomical points and cultivating more skilled use of weighted lines. The torso is also focussed on because, gesture flows outwards from the relation of the torso masses.
Moving on to seeing the figure in terms of design and gestural whole, using long sweeping lines to approximate the figure and capture the feeling of movement and aliveness. The torso will be then be built within the overall gestural context.
Finally, considering longer poses and beginning to work with rendering (classical rendering in light and shade) to further emphasise and substantiate the qualities previously worked on - form (3-dimensionality), key anatomical points, gestural and design relationships
This workshop will cover form and anatomy, design and gesture and rendering to solidify the figure and emphasise gesture and design. Some time will be spent with a live model.
