Combining Africa Day and the International Day of the African Child celebrations, in 2023 the Cairns African Festival will be once again held at FOGARTY PARK, the Esplanade.
With FREE AFRICAN DRUM WORKSHOPS, African craft and charity stalls, African food stalls, a Fashion Parade and an array of talented local and interstate performers, the CAIRNS AFRICAN FESTIVAL is the biggest African cultural event in the region.
Headlining acts this year include:-
The Valanga Khoza Band - Valanga Khoza, the renowned Melbourne based South African vocalist and multi instrumentalist, leads a 5 piece band featuring vocal harmonies, guitar, percussion and traditional instruments such as the Kalimba, Shipendani and Shijoro (Jaw Harp). The infectious South African grooves will be sure to have everyone on their feet!
Bassidi Kone - Griot and master of the Djembe (West African Drum) and Balafon (West African wooden Xylophone), With his current album currently on the World Music Charts, Bassidi is one of the greatest players of Djembe & Balafon of the modern world. His innovative solo lead playing and technical virtuosity is almost unrivaled. The performance with his fellow West African instrumentalists will be sure to amaze.
The talented spread of Local African Performers will be announced here, as they are finalised.
These will include various community groups, performing dances and songs of Africa.
FREE CHILDRENS DRUM WORKSHOPS with Bassidi Kone will be held over 3 afternoons in the week leading up to the festival. Children who participate in these workshops will have the opportunity to perform at the Festival with Bassidi.
2 FREE ADULT DRUM WORKSHOPS with Bassidi will also take place at Fogarty Park on the morning of the Festival, from 9:00am.
