What makes a great writing style? How can editors help bring out the best in a writer’s work? This workshop covers style issues often encountered editing fiction and narrative non-fiction, especially matters of voice and tone. We’ll explore techniques to tighten expression, ensuring narrative cohesion and variation, paying particular attention to the sentence level. You’ll identify and come up with solutions to repetition, redundancy and style mannerisms; common manuscript flaws; language issues; and technical and presentational problems. Identifying and discussing problems of expression can be challenging for editors who work with creative writers. We’ll discuss ways to work collaboratively, respecting the writer’s voice, while flagging style questions with tact and honesty. This workshop is practical and interactive, with sample texts that illustrate the issues discussed. It will include opportunities and scope to raise issues in editing and writing fiction and narrative non-fiction.Location
