ICOMOS declared a Climate Emergency in 2020, recognising the potential of heritage to enable inclusive, transformative and just climate action through the safeguarding of all types of heritage from adverse climate impacts, implementing risk-informed disaster responses, and delivering climate resilient sustainable development - all from a perspective of equity and justice. This General Assembly Resolution calls for working in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples, vulnerable and frontline communities; is driven by participatory climate governance; gender-responsive human rights; and utilises rights-based approaches that contribute to transformative change. This built on the ‘Future of our Pasts’ report, which was published by ICOMOS in 2018, and called for solidarity between heritage professionals and those communities most affected or least able to bear the cost of climate change.

The International Day for Monuments and Sites - 18 April 2023 provides a timely opportunity to showcase strategies demonstrating the full potential of heritage research and practices which deliver climate-resilient pathways, while advocating for inclusive transitions to low-carbon futures. It is part of the ICOMOS Triennial Scientific Plan 2021-2024 and supports the 2020 ICOMOS resolution on Peoplecentred Approaches to Cultural Heritage. - ICOMOS Thematic Abstract

EVENT

To celebrate the ICOMOS International Day of Monuments and Sites, Australia ICOMOS (NSW) are holding and event on 18 April. To honour the theme "Heritage Changes", Wayne Johnson (Place Management NSW) will be speaking to the preparation of The Rocks Disaster Risk Management Strategy.

The Rocks is a place of exceptional cultural significance to the people of Sydney, New South Wales and Australia. Due to its location and strong historical character, The Rocks attracts millions of tourists every year—local, interstate and international. Its heritage is an important driver for local business and an important contributor to the city’s and the state’s economies. The Heritage Disaster Risk Management Strategy provides property owners and managers of The Rocks Precinct with the framework and mitigation measures to manage disaster risks and their potential impacts on the heritage significance of the precinct.
