SYNOPSIS
King Lear explores themes of power, betrayal and excessive pride.
Ageing ruler, Lear, decides to divide his realm into three parts to be shared between his daughters, and then go into retirement. All the daughters need do is declare their love. Unfortunately, Cordelia does not play along and is banished. His other two daughters do not enjoy his extended stays and he finds himself betrayed and cast aside.
Lear descends into madness and tragedy ensues.
KEY ROLES AVAILABLE
Age and gender to be used as a guide only. Due to the intended setting of this production of King Lear, characters can be of any ethnicity.
The Theatre Guild encourages actors of all backgrounds and genders to audition.
Please note the role of Lear has already been cast.
GLOUCESTER - (Male presenting, 40s-60s) Lear’s friend and father to Edgar and Edmond. Is blinded by Regan and Cornwall.
EDGAR - (Male presenting, 20s-early 30s) legitimate son of Gloucester. Poses as Poor Tom.
EDMOND - (Male presenting, 20s-30s) illegitimate son of Gloucester. Schemes against his brother and father.
CORDELIA - (Female presenting, 20s) Lear’s youngest daughter, makes the mistake of honesty.
REGAN - (Female presenting, 30s-40s) Lear’s second daughter. Married to Cornwall.
GONERIL - (Female presenting, 30s-40s) Lear’s first daughter, married to Albany (note: this is a same sex marriage).
ALBANY - (Female presenting, 30s-50s) Married to Goneril (note: this is a same sex marriage).
CORNWALL - (Male presenting, 30s-50s) Married to Regan.
There will be a cast of at least 14 actors of whom most will play multiple roles.
AUDITION BOOKED BY ONLINE APPOINTMENT ONLY
Auditions are individual slots of 15 minutes each.
Please prepare from memory a 1-minute (minimum) monologue from any Shakespeare play.
On booking an audition, provide your correct email address. An audition form will be provided.
Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow yourself time to prepare for your audition. We recommend you wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and bring water.
Be prepared to play around with your audition!

We encourage performers 18+ of all races and ethnicities, gender identities and abilities to audition. However, please be aware that the Little Theatre is not fully equipped for those with a physical disability. The foyer and auditorium are accessible via ground floor entrance, but the stage and backstage areas are unfortunately not equipped for wheelchair access.
