Horticulture – global food and nutritional security
In this lecture, ECU’s Foundation Professor of Horticultural Science, Zora Singh, will highlight the future drivers of production and postharvest horticulture, including minimising global losses in horticultural produce from farm gate to the consumers.
Professor Singh will also discuss technologies to mitigate production and post-harvest losses in fresh horticultural produce. Fresh produce is highly perishable, and the global postharvest losses account for 30 to 44%.
Alarmingly, over the next 20 to 30 years food production will need to increase by 50% to meet the demands of our snowballing world population. Ensuring global food and nutritional security with limited land and water resources will become a world-wide challenge.
Food for thought indeed.
