ARTSNational Perth -The High Summer of Akhenaten & Nefertiti
About
Between 1356–1332 BC during Egypt’s 18th Dynasty a young royal couple led an explosive revolution in religion, art, and culture. Expelling Egypt’s traditional, gods Akhenaten imposed a monotheistic cult that worshipped the being of the solar disk, the Aten. Aided in this endeavour by his queen Nefertiti, the pair abandoned the capital Thebes and built a new city hundreds of kilometres to the north on a virgin site at Amarna. Here they forced slave workers to build temples to the Aten, royal palaces, and new tombs. There was a wholescale revolution in how the king and queen were depicted in painting, relief, and sculpture, creating one of the most clearly defined artistic eras in world history. This lecture covers the history and art of this short but remarkable time with a rich and exciting series of images delivered by ancient world historian and archaeologist Guy de la Bedoyere.Location
