- In 1993 a breast cancer vaccine was tested extensively in pre-clinical models
- In 1995 it was tested in humans for safety and immunogenicity
- A series of over 10 different clinical trials were conducted thereafter in cancer patients.
- Studies showed that the vaccine was safe and stimulated anti-cancer responses.
- In parallel, a long term study was conducted 1997-2022 (25 years), which showed protection of breast cancer recurrence in patients who received the vaccine compared to those who received placebo.
- A large study is required prior to taking it to the next step of commercialisation.
- New cancer markers and combination therapies are being developed to optimise the vaccines.
