Sketches of Myrtle @IFMaitland
About
An ongoing performance series, Sketches… showcases the work of Maitland creative and performing artist Matt Petherbridge, through the lens of Myrtle - towards his ambition of taking his ‘Myrtle Rock Opera’, a death-bed fairytale inspired by parenthood, creativity, deepest worries and overcoming the depths of grief and death - from the pen to page to ending.
Debuting at the 2023 Newcastle Fringe Festival, Sketches of Myrtle has evolved in unexpected venues such as Maitland Taste Festival, Hamilton Station Hotel and Maitland Heritage Festival - as well as cameos at Newcastle/Hunter Valley Folk Club and Temple of the Stag, the 90’s grunge inspired jam night at The Stag and Hunter.Sketches of Myrtle marks a new chapter in Petherbridge’s oeuvre, striving for a magnum opus that draws upon his past lives in music journalism, theatre, poetry and songwriting.
At the 2021 if Festival, Petherbridge launched his debut publication, Verses: The First Stanza (Maitland Verses Poets 2017-2020), commissioned by Maitland Libraries to honour their poets-in-cafes residency program.
In 2020, prior to COVID, he exhibited ‘MY LIFE’S WORK WORLD TOUR: Vol. 1 / Beauty, Light, Struggle, Resolve’, his debut art and poetry series at The Bikesmith & Espresso Bar for Maitland’s Artastique Festival.
In 2018, Petherbridge undertook a personal project, Creative180 B4 30, which consisted of daily acts of creativity in the 180 days before he turned 30. Throughout the 180 days, Petherbridge touched upon the visual arts, acting and creativity classes, poetry and music. Following his ‘180’, Petherbridge contributed features to The Conveyor, a magazine profiling working class creatives in Maitland.
As a music journalist, he has profiled Australian and international music superstars such as Steve Kilbey of The Church, Van Dyke Parks, Steve ‘The Colonel’ Cropper (Booker T & The MG’s/The Blues Brothers), ‘Weird’ Al Yankovic and many more.
