What makes a great Decodable Reader?
Nicole Forrest and Mary Serenc have collaborated in writing the Soundwaves Decodable Readers Series (Firefly Education) for Foundation and Year 1 students. In exciting news, the series has recently been shortlisted in the Speech Pathology Australia 'Book of the Year Awards’ Decodable Readers category.
Find out what Decodable Readers are and how they work. In this workshop they will talk about the process and challenge of writing fun and captivating storylines when words used must follow not only a systematic phonic sequence but are so tightly constrained by word count, sentence types, page spreads and much more.
Put your own creativity to the test and ‘think out of the box’ when your world of vocabulary shrinks to very few words. You may be surprised by what you find.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Mary has over 30 years of classroom experience, specialising in early years education. She has authored over 40 textbooks and teacher resource books. Mary is always dreaming up stories and poems. She scribbles all her great story ideas on sticky notes which promptly fall off the wall into an abyss. She will not stop until a story is just right, and she certainly will not tolerate a story that’s boring!
Nicole has a background in primary education and a Master of Applied Linguistics. She has worked in various roles in educational publishing for a decade. She is fascinated by language and is always on the lookout for wonderful words and unique story ideas. Nicole often calls Mary with new ideas from the most unlikely places, like a tent in an outback paddock, a pillow pirate ship captained by her nieces or an old fishing shack with very patchy wifi.
In the last two years, Mary and Nicole have authored 266 decodable readers published by Firefly Education. These little books are important tools for teaching young children how to read.
