Reading Fast? or Reading Well? Let's Take Another Look at Reading Fluency
This session, presented by an internationally recognised expert on fluency, provides an updated and functional definition of reading fluency. The workshop also clarifies the role of curriculum-based measures (CBM) of oral reading fluency (ORF), often used to screen students and monitor their overall progress in reading: What do these measures really tell us and how should they be used appropriately? The updated compiled ORF norms (Hasbrouck & Tindal, 1992; 2006; 2017) will be discussed. Research-supported fluency instruction strategies will also be addressed. This whole day offering provides an opportunity to reflect on how fluency supports reading comprehension and how it should fit into a comprehensive and effective reading program for all students.
Completing Reading fast or reading well? Let’s take another look at fluency will contribute 4 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and assessment of NSW Curriculum/Early Years Learning Framework addressing Standard Descriptors 2.1.2, 2.5.2, 5.1.2 and 5.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher in NSW.
