The Picnic Suite by Claude Bolling will be performed by Abby Fraser on flute, Aaron Entresz on guitar, Tom Misson on piano, Ian Cocking on bass and Matthew Ives on drums. This third-stream, seven movement work was written for Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alexandre Lagoya in 1980. Claude Bolling's music elegantly mixes classical and jazz elements, deeming it “third stream” or “crossover” music. American music critic Allan Kozinn wrote of the winning ‘formula’ that Bolling created for his music, noting: “In his crossover pieces, Bolling’s compositional strategy involves giving his classical soloists a through-composed part, written in a style replete with Baroque and classical gestures and allusions to the featured instrument’s repertory and idiomatic uses, while his own piano, bass and percussion trio interacts with a lightweight jazz counterpoint.”Location
