A classic Victorian thriller by Patrick Hamilton
Although set in Victorian London at the end of the 19th Century, the sinister theme of psychological menace has travelled easily via 21st Century social media and beyond. For reasons which are later revealed, Jack Manningham has been relentlessly undermining and manipulating his wife Bella, to the extent that she begins to doubt her own sanity, and that she is mad, as Manningham insists. Alone, and in utter despair, in a room lit only by gaslight, Bella receives an unexpected visitor, a former police detective, named Rough. He listens attentively as she finds the courage to confide in him, then to her utter astonishment, reveals the reason for his presence.
