The Night Owls - Thursday Night Swing
Swing Dancing
Swing dancing is a family of dances danced to “swinging” jazz music, the most famous of which is the Lindy Hop! Lindy Hop is rooted in African American culture and values and was danced first by African American originators in Harlem, New York City. It has since become a global phenomenon with wonderful enthusiastic swing communities all over the world. Lindy hop can be danced to a range of tempos…it can be wild, exuberant, and high energy or slow, chilled, and intimate. It is improvised (or created in the moment) with you, your partner, and the music!
Class Info
6:30 pm - Beginners from scratch: These classes are designed for dancers with no previous experience. They'll introduce the fundamentals of swing dancing, the basic shapes and some accessible moves you can use on the social dance floor. Each class will build up your swing dance vocabulary so you can start creating and improvising with your partner.
We'll also share some of the amazing artists who have created jazz music and hope to inspire you to learn more about this rich, living culture.
7:45 pm - Level 1.5: These classes are designed for dancers who have the basic swing rhythms of 6 beat and charleston under their belt and want to extend their learning.
No partner is required for any class. We rotate partners so you'll be able to dance and meet our community.

Acknowledgement of Country
We acknowledge we are gathering and dancing on the ancestral lands of the Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the first inhabitants of this nation and the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we live, learn, work and dance. We pay our respects to their leaders - past, present and emerging. We take this opportunity to honour and appreciate the rich musical and dance culture of Australia's first people.Terms and Conditions
