Essential Resonance is a philosophical principle coined by Carlos Salzedo, founder of the modern harp. It relates to how to understand and approach writing for the harp. Namely, that its uniqueness resides in its capacity to resonate - the way in which the strings are set in motion, overtones are allowed to resonate, interlock, and the way sound decays naturally, or is stopped by the hands. All these aspects influence how mood, timbre and colour are created on the harp.
