Sometimes a client attends counselling with you to directly discuss abuse they’ve received in a relationship. But sometimes with a client who is attending for different support, hints and clues emerge from their conversations with you suggesting a pattern of abuse may be occurring for them even if the client is not naming it as such. In this session we’ll unpack the dynamics of an abusive relationship, and explore the “how” of a trauma-aware counselling response designed for maximising client choice and safety - to build trust, hold space, respect strengths and acts-of-resistance, inform and/or refer, and support positive client-centred change.
Please prepare any DV questions you may have for Sue before the meeting. There will be time for questions at the end.
